Spread across an area of 67 sq. km, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is located at a distance of 19 km from Mysore city, and about 128 km away from the city of Bangalore. The sanctuary is the home to some of the most exquisite birds. This bird sanctuary also offers picturesque setting. As you enter the area, you will find huge spread of bamboo trees. Throughout the path, you can see various boards with pictures and names of the birds that can be spotted here.
It boasts of a wide variety of avian fauna. Roughly 170 birds have been recorded here. Of these, the painted stork, Asian open bill stork, common spoonbill, woolly-necked stork, black-headed ibis, lesser whistling duck, Indian shag, stork-billed kingfisher, egret, cormorant, Oriental darter, and heron breed here regularly . You can spot a wide array of migratory birds that have flown from places like Siberia, Australia and North America. A variety of mammals and reptiles can also be spotted such as common mongoose, flying fox, palm civet, common otter, bonnet macaque, and the marsh crocodile.

The best time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of June and November as these are nesting month for the birds.
